What is the William Allen White Award?
The William Allen White Award is Kansas's children's choice book award. Established in 1952, it was the first literature award of its kind in the country. All 50 states now have awards like it.
Each school year, a master list is released for kids in grades 3-5, and another for kids in grades 6-8. Students are encouraged to read the books on the list and vote for their favorite between approximately January 15 and April 15. (Louisburg Library collects votes from January 15th through April 14th.) Students are welcome to read and vote for books on either list.
The book on each list with the most votes wins that year's award. In October of each year, the winning authors travel to Kansas to meet their readers, sign books, present about their writing, and accept the award. The event takes place at the William Allen White Library on the Emporia State campus. Attendance is free. In 2025, the authors were Katherine Applegate and Gordon Korman.
